Family tradition, confirmed by Teagle's military service records, said that John had served with the regiment until his capture at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, and that he was surrendered with General Joe Johnston at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865 at the end of the war. But nobody seemed to know why he was in Vicksburg when the 12th Louisiana was not, or what he did between July 1863 and April 1865. That set me on the road at an early age to a lifetime of studying Confederate military history. I now know why John Teagle was at Vicksburg, and how he got to North Carolina at the end of the war. I have "walked where they walked" and "stood where they stood" on many of the Civil War sites where the 12th Louisiana was present. I would like to share that knowledge with other descendants of these 12th Louisiana soldiers. The amount of regimental history recounted via these web pages is limited by space. I am in the process of polishing a manuscript presenting a detailed history of the 12th Louisiana which I will publish. Please browse these web pages and contact me with any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have. I am especially interested in exchanging information with descendants about family members who served with the 12th Louisiana. The names of 1,735 soldiers who served in this regiment at some point during the war are listed by company of origin as they appear in the microfilmed Compiled Military Service Records at the National Archives. I have created an extensive database containing service highlight notes for each of these men from data extracted from the CMSR. I have crossed checked the information against Andrew B. Booth's Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Louisiana Confederate Commands [New Orleans, 1920], and added in other personal data as I gain access to it. This is a lifetime work and there is still much to do!
