The 12th Louisiana Infantry was organized at Camp Moore, Louisiana in August 1861 with ten companies of volunteers from several northern Louisiana parishes. In the spring of 1862 two additional companies were added bringing the total to 12 companies. In July 1862, "first Company M" was merged with Company C into a new Company C. In September of 1862 a company of exchanged prisoners of war that had belonged to the 9th Louisiana Infantry was added to the regiment and designated "second Company M." The 12th Louisiana organization carried twelve companies for the balance of the war. To read a brief history of each company and to view a roster of the men who served in that company, click on the company name in the second column of the table below. The regimental headquarters page is reached by clicking on Field & Staff in the first column in the table below.
A note to genealogy researchers:
The 12th Battalion, Louisiana Infantry remained within the State of Louisiana. In November of 1863 it was merged with the Crescent Regiment [a.k.a. 24th Louisiana Infantry] and the 11th Battalion of Louisiana Infantry to form the Consolidated Crescent Regiment. Along with Gray's 28th Louisiana Infantry, the Consolidated Crescent Regiment attacked the head of Bank's column advancing up the Red River on April 8, 1864 at Mansfield. The 12th Battalion, Louisiana Heavy Artillery was formed in Virginia from 5 independent companies of artillery present for duty on the Virginia Peninsula in early 1862. Two companies were from Orleans Parish, two companies from the state of Virginia, and one company from the state of Alabama. This "Louisiana" battalion was transferred from Virginia in September 1862 to provide the artillery garrison for the newly created earthworks blocking the Mississippi River at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
