Company G
May 1862 to April 1865 |
This company of volunteers was enrolled in Confederate service at Homer, Louisiana during late February and early March of 1862. Unlike all of the other companies which joined the regiment, this group chose no nickname for themselves. Perhaps the harsh realities of war were evident to these men and they were in no mood for any motivational "rah rah" that might come from a group nom-de-guerre. In any event, they departed from Homer on March 18, 1862 and reached the 12th Louisiana Infantry at Fort Pillow, Tennessee on April 1, 1862. Under the re-organization "for three years or the duration of the war" that took place on May 10, 1862 at Fort Pillow, this company was designated Company G of the 12th Louisiana Infantry and this is the only name for the group that has survived. Thomas J. Hightower was Captain of the company until his resignation on June 30, 1862 due to ill health. He suffered from chronic bronchitis. Thomas Price had enrolled as the company 1st Sergeant and was elevated to 2nd Lieutenant before the May 10th re-organization. He was replaced as 1st Sergeant by George W. Yates who was then re-elected. Price was passed over 1st Lieutenant Thornton Bridgemen to replace Hightower as Captain in June 1862. They remained in these leadership positions until all three were wounded in action at Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864. Companies K and G of the 12th Louisiana Infantry were consolidated during the April 9, 1865 re-organization in North Carolina. Lieutenant Lyons, 1st Sergeant Alfred Thomas Nelson, Corporal Isaac Newton Brown, and 10 privates from Company G were present for the surrender on April 26, 1865. |
