Company A
May 1862 to April 1865 |
The North Louisiana Cadets were organized from farms and communities in the Louisiana parishes of DeSoto, Natchitoches, and Sabine. While the initial place of organization before arriving at Camp Moore is not known, recruits joining the company after Camp Moore came from enrollment centers at Coushatta Chute and Pleasant Hill. The community of Mansfield does not appear in these records as an enrollment center or destination for furloughs. One correspondent with family from this area has informed me that Coushatta Chute designated a rural area immediately west of Natchitoches around the Coldwater, Robeline, and Central Baptist communities. A U. S. Geological Survey indicates that Coushatta Chute is an alternative name for Coushatta Bayou near the town of Coushatta. Other accounts also point to the modern community of Coushatta. Captain John T. Jordan served as the company commander from his election at Camp Moore in August 1861 until his resignation on October 14, 1864. However, he was absent sick for most of 1863 and 1864 and the unit was commanded by 1st Lieutenant Willis M. Davis during almost all of the combat experienced by this company. Lieutenant Davis did not return from the Tennessee campaign and was apparently killed in action or mortally wounded. 2nd Lieutenant George W. Singleton did not return from his January 1865 furlough in Louisiana. Reporting into the Federal parole center in Natchitoches to be accounted for and released on parole, Singleton signed as "Captain, Companies A & D Consolidated, 12th Louisiana Infantry." None of the company officers was present in North Carolina. 1st Sergeant Jonathan A. McKinley was the senior non-commissioned officer present with the consolidated Company A & D at the final surrender at the end of April 1865. Second Lieutenant James W. Sandiford was appointed Regimental Adjutant on 26 January 1862 and held this position at the rank of 1st Lieutenant until his resignation on 28 November 1864. Carol Lee Yarbrough has put together a Standifer/Sandiford family website and included information on James W. Sandiford. She also has posted information on other family members who served in both Confederate and Union armies during the war. Scroll down her Home Page and click on the button marked Military Records and then on Civil War - Confederacy. Under the Louisiana section you will find materials on Colonel Thomas C. Standifer and 1st Lieutenant James W. Sandiford. Carol has graciously provided a hyperlink back to the 12th Louisiana Home Page for those of you who choose to visit her site from here. |
